NationBuilder serves as a versatile tool for managing relationships and contacts, particularly in the context of fundraising. Users have found it valuable for establishing online presence and engaging supporters, thanks to its integration with Twitter and Facebook that seamlessly incorporates followers into automated workflows. Additionally, NationBuilder aids in campaign sites and the expansion of mailing lists for political organizations. Its user-friendly interface enables users to easily handle websites, communications, and donor information without relying on technical expertise. The tagging feature allows for personalized stakeholder interaction by assigning attributes and interests to individuals in the database. While some users have encountered challenges with basic search functionality and security certificate issues, NationBuilder has proven effective for organizing events, fostering grassroots movements, targeted contact lists, stakeholder management, community engagement, voter contact, website deployment, digital campaigns, and constructing campaign websites. Despite its limitations, users express a willingness to collaborate with NationBuilder towards software improvement.

Users commonly recommend the following improvements for NationBuilder:

  • Prioritize requirements and create user guides. Users suggest prioritizing requirements and creating easy-to-use guides for different user profiles. This would help users navigate the platform more effectively and ensure that their most important needs are met.

  • Take advantage of training opportunities. Users advise taking advantage of trainings offered by NationBuilder to unlock the full potential of the platform. This would enable users to make the most out of its features and functionalities.

  • Conduct a trial period for integration and functionality. Users recommend conducting a trial period to ensure seamless integration and functionality with NationBuilder. This allows users to evaluate whether the platform meets their specific needs before committing to it.

These recommendations address the need for better guidance in using NationBuilder, maximizing its potential through training, and ensuring smooth integration during the evaluation process.

I currently do consultant work for an organization called South Carolina Carry. We use NationBuilder for digital outreach. It allows us to find and engage current and potential supporters. We use NationBuilder to work these supporters up the ladder of engagement.
  • NationBuilder is great for fundraising. You can send an email blast and see how much money it raised. You can publish a petition and have it lead to a donate page. With the higher level plans you can easily allow new members to join and pay for membership through your site.
  • Petitions, surveys, and other forms of engagement. NationBuilder provides a number of ways to interact with supporters. It's very easy to set up a survey or petition, and you're able to capture the data of participants.
  • Social sharing. NationBuilder makes it simple for supporters to share your pages, petitions, blog posts, etc., by providing share links on every page. They also allow you to edit the default text for sharing.
  • NationBuilder lacks the ability to create a message board.
  • NationBuilder needs to add threaded comments so you can respond to people who comment on your page.
  • NationBuilder needs to make it easier to offer tiered memberships.
If you're a grassroots organization trying to reach and mobilize supporters, NationBuilder is one of the best tools around. I don't think it would be as effective for a commercial enterprise.
  • We've raised a lot of money through emails, petitions, and donations.
  • We've increased our membership.
  • We've improved our ability to mobilize membership.
  • i-360 and Voter Gravity
NationBuilder is not as good for canvassing or phone GOTV efforts, but it's better for community building.
